A museum-quality work of art, oil on canvas, created and signed by Amedeo Modigliani.
A portrait of the highest pictorial quality, which sums up much of his artistic career.
Amedeo Modigliani was born in Tuscany to a family of Jewish origin.
He grew up in Livorno, a city that had a long history as a place of refuge for people who were severely persecuted for practicing their religion.
In fact, Solomon Garsin, Modigliani's great-great-grandfather, was a Jewish refugee who moved to Livorno in the 18th century.
Modigliani's parents were Flaminio and Eugenia Garsin.
Previously, his family had a comfortable life thanks to a successful currency exchange business. However, the Modiglianis suffered from a difficult financial situation due to a bankruptcy. Due to this unfortunate situation, the family lived in poverty.
The young boy was much closer to his mother, who educated him until he reached the age of 10.
When he was 11 years old, he suffered from pleurisy, which eventually developed into typhoid fever. About 5 years later, he fell ill with pleurisy and tuberculosis again, but thanks to his mother's great love and care, Modigliani made a full recovery.
After recovering from his illnesses, he was accompanied by his mother on a fascinating tour through southern Italy. Among the places they visited were Rome, Amalfi, Capri, Venice, Florence, and Naples.
Thanks to his particularly close relationship with his mother, the budding artist was more inspired to pursue his love of art as a primary vocation. It should be noted that the artist often devoted himself to painting and drawing from an early age.
He discovered his love and ability in art, and it all started even before he began formal studies.
During the years from 1898 to 1900 Modigliani decided to work at Micheli's art school.
In his early Parisian works it was evident that his masterpieces were largely influenced by his knowledge of Renaissance art. Among his inspirations were Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Caravaggio.
When Modigliani was still in Rome in 1901, he was greatly inspired by the works of Domenico Morelli. The artist was known for his masterpieces that featured scenes and images from the Bible and literature. As a student of Micheli, the young Modigliani learned more about various other subjects, including still life, portraiture, nude and landscape.
In 1902 the artist continued his passion for life drawing and this was the reason why he decided to study at the Academy of Fine Arts, which was located in Florence.
In 1906, he chose to move to Paris, which was famous for its avant-garde art.
It was his arrival in Paris that allowed him to present his artistic experimentation alongside other artists including Juan Gris, Piet Mondrian, and Picasso. He eventually developed his own unique style, which cannot be properly categorized with those of other artists.
While in Paris, Modigliani stayed at Le Bateau-Lavoir, which was famous for struggling artists living in the city.
He rented a studio where he cultivated his passion for art despite his financial difficulties.
Although he lived a difficult life in Montmartre, he tried to look as presentable as possible. Although his wardrobe was never sophisticated, he still did his best to look decent.
When he first arrived in Paris, Modigliani would often send letters to his mother.
He also maintained discipline in drinking and often drew nudes during his classes at the Colarossi School. Since he was new to the city, he was quite reserved and hardly socialized with many people.
After adjusting well to Paris, his reputation slowly changed to become more of a rebellious artist. In fact, his studio was often in disarray and he became both an alcoholic and a drug addict.
However, it was also during this time that the artist slowly developed his talent, as depicted in his works and his unique way of thinking.
Soon, Modigliani began to reject his early works as he felt that he did not have much knowledge and skill in art in those years. Parallel to his progress as an artist, he became quite known for his strange behaviors that almost resembled some of the greatest artists of all time, including Vincent van Gogh.
During the last years of his life, Modigliani continued with his works. Unfortunately, his health was starting to fail him due to his addiction to alcohol. In 1920, his neighbors noticed that he hardly ever went out for many days. When his neighbor went to check on him, Modigliani was found delirious in bed. He was also holding his partner who was about 9 months pregnant.
Although his neighbor called a doctor, there was not much that could be done as the artist was already dying of a terrible disease called tubercular meningitis. Therefore, he died of this disease on January 24, 1920. Several artists from the communities of Montparnasse and Montmartre attended the funeral. The artist died in poverty, but his exceptional reputation grew after his death.
His life inspired numerous artists and various novels, feature films and other tributes were produced in memory of this extraordinary artist who contributed so much to the history of art.
